California Community Colleges are building a Retail Workforce

December 04, 2014

Retail employs over 42 million people and is responsible for 1 in 4 jobs in the United States.

Recognizing retail as a key economic sector, California Community Colleges have partnered with the Western Association of Food Chains (WAFC), a non-profit organization comprised of retailers and wholesalers in the Western United States representing over 7,500 supermarkets and $200 billion dollars in annual sales, to offer the industry-recognized Retail Management Certificate.

This Certificate is available at over 135 community colleges throughout the Western United States, including 60 community colleges in California. Students in this program gain skills and knowledge needed for success as a leader in the Retail industry. Courses include key business topics such as leadership, marketing, finance, and management. Upon completion students are eligible for two certificates: a college certificate that leads to an associate’s degree, and an industry-recognized credential that is linked to employment, career advancement, and increased wages.

The retail management certificate has also been recognized by the United States Department of Labor as a model community college and industry certificate program.
